Dieser Artikel basiert auf einer Präsentation, welche ich am 23. September 2016 an der Westfälischen Wilhelms Universität in Münster hielt. Er wurde 2020 erst auf Academia.edu in deutscher Sprache veröffentlicht.

Er behandelt die Comic Mini-Serie "Joe the Barbarian". Dessen Autor, Grant Morrison, wollte gemäss eigenen Aussagen mit diesem Werk das "fantasy genre" glaubhafter und neu für das 21. Jahrhundert adaptieren. Dieser Aufsatz untersucht inwiefern dies, auch angesichts der vielen erfolgreichen Werke, die in den vergangenen beiden Jahrzehnten in diesem Genre/Modus erschienen sind, überhaupt möglich ist, respektive inwieweit es Morrison tatsächlich gelungen ist, gewisse typische Elemente in seinem Comic auf einen aktuelleren Stand zu bringen. Hierfür ist es unter anderem auch notwendig zunächst festzustellen, was Grant Morrison scheinbar unter dem Begriff "fantasy genre" versteht.

This essay is based on a presentation, which I held at the University of Münster on September 23rd 2016. It has only been published in German on Academia.edu in 2020.

The paper discusses the comic mini-series "Joe the Barbarian", which was written by Grant Morrison. The author claims that he intended to update the "fantasy genre" for the 21st century with this comic. This essay discusses if the author manages to transform some of the typical elements of this genre/mode according to contemporary tastes and standards and if this, regarding the many succesful publications in the "fantasy genre" during tha past two decades, is possible. In order to do this, it is paramount to first uncover what Grant Morrison apparently understands in the term "fantasy genre".
